Today Natalie, our BYF Facilitator, and I visited Kew High School to get updated on the progress of the SRC Team and their Friday morning breakfast initiative 'Mostly Toastie'.
Coming from a desire to provide a tasty breakfast to kids who might skip that all important first meal, the SRC Team at Kew High School applied for a grant from Boroondara Youth Foundation to purchase a sandwich maker and a hot water urn.
After watching the student leadership team run through their weekly Wednesday meeting, Natalie was very impressed. "The professionalism I see here is so inspiring; it's great to see students like yourselves stepping up and taking initiative," she said, as she began her presentation.
Natalie presented to the student leadership team, letting them know about the awesome opportunities offered to them by the Boroondara Youth Foundation, such as the Grants Panel, and the $1,500 grants themselves. The students thought up some pretty great ideas, such as a school eco-garden, and an evening where the significance of sustainable living is demonstrated. "This would create a discussion on the importance of sustainability", remarked one student. There was even some mention of chickens for the garden!
It's so cool to see youth coming up with fresh ideas that can positively benefit their school community, as well as the wider Boroondara. We are so excited to see what comes next for Kew High School and their SRC Team!
